Dear colleagues in ministry, The summer is speeding onward and September will be upon us very soon. I hope that your summer days have been filled with some time for relaxation. In September we will again be gathering for Catechetical Leaders meetings. This year during our Catechetical Leaders meetings we will be focusing once again on professional development and personal spiritual growth so as to help you better serve your parish. It is my hope that in the coming year our office can help with your endeavors to provide faith formation programming that offers opportunities for children, teens and adults to come to know Jesus. Sincerely, Andrea Schaffer Diocesan Associate Director of Faith Formation Danielle Cummings, Chancellor May 16, 2017 communication: As many of you are aware, Cathy Cornue is retiring on August 1 as Diocesan Director of Faith Formation. We are most grateful for Cathy’s years of service and ministry to the people of our diocese. In keeping with our diocesan strategic planning process and our diocesan mission of evangelization, a study of the Office of Faith Formation will be conducted to identify its role in our changing parishes/PCAs. The goal is to evaluate parish faith formation as it is presently offered and identify how the diocesan office can assist in improving the effectiveness of catechesis. The diocesan strategic planning committee will serve as a Task Force to spearhead the study working collaboratively with the staff of the Office of Faith Formation. Members are: Msgr. Timothy Elmer, Msgr. Richard Kopp, Msgr. John Putano, Father Mark Kaminski, Father John Hogan, Father John Canorro, Father John Manno, Father Christopher Celentano, Father Richard Prior, and Father John Kurgan. Danielle Cummings, Chancellor will serve as the facilitator of the group and will oversee the Office of Faith Formation after August 1. The study will seek input from clergy, catechetical leaders, catechists and other diocesan ministry leaders. It is anticipated that the process will take no more than 6 months in order to provide a set of recommendations to Bishop Cunningham. Get to the heart of what it means to be a catechist!
The Diocese of Syracuse is offering a presentation titled “The Heart of the Catechist,” inspired by Pope Francis’ address to the Congress on Catechesis. We have been called by God to ministry - not just to volunteer. All catechists are encouraged to attend this inspirational experience. We welcome those who may be interested in catechetical ministry in their parish as well.
