Our April meeting was focused on Alternative models for Catechesis. I shared several different models for catechesis programming for our parish. Much of the google side presentation below is the work of Dr. Joseph White from Our Sunday Visitor who presented at the Mid-Atlantic Congress in February 2018.
Dr. White proposes 5 "new" models for the delivery of faith formation programming in our parishes. Beginning at slide 7 you will see the information shared by Dr. White. Our gathered Catechetical leaders both on Thursday evening and Friday morning had very lively conversation about how these models for catechesis (and others) may or may not work in our particular settings. As a result of our conversation several Catechetical Leaders began planning to gather post our meeting to discuss further how they might use this new information to come up with plans for their individual parish settings. My desire is to gather all catechetical leader again in June for an opportunity to continue our discussion about alternative models for catechesis. I challenged those leaders present to look at making a small change this coming year in the way they deliver faith formation program so as to better reach families. St. Francis of Assisi and St. Ambrose parishes have generously donated the following books for you to give to your catechists. Act soon if you desire to distribute any of these titles to your catechists. The supply is limited as you can see! The titles and the amount of books I have left can be found below : Why Be Catholic - by Michael Leach (34) Habits of the Soul - by Linda Perrone Rooney (24) Perfectly yourself - by Matthew Kelly (14) The prayer aid and two alternative catechesis model handouts can be found in theApril 2018 folder. An Escape Room is a physical adventure game in which players solve a series puzzles and riddles using clues, hints and strategy to learn your curriculum objectives. The developer of this activity Cheryl Smith, St. John the Evangelist, New Hartford focused her "escape room" on breaking open the Exodus story with 8th graders. Cheryl shared with those gathered some great ideas about how to expand the lesson as well as some other possible application. This is an activity that could be developed for just about any age group. The diocesan resource website RCfaithquest gives you access to the planning sheet for this activity. I am happy to share this "Escape Room" activity with anyone who would like to better understand the activity so as to use the material. And yes Cheryl left the props, clues and puzzles with me to share with you.

Sincerely, Andrea Schaffer Diocesan Associate Director of Faith Formation Danielle Cummings, Chancellor May 16, 2017 communication: As many of you are aware, Cathy Cornue is retiring on August 1 as Diocesan Director of Faith Formation. We are most grateful for Cathy’s years of service and ministry to the people of our diocese. In keeping with our diocesan strategic planning process and our diocesan mission of evangelization, a study of the Office of Faith Formation will be conducted to identify its role in our changing parishes/PCAs. The goal is to evaluate parish faith formation as it is presently offered and identify how the diocesan office can assist in improving the effectiveness of catechesis. The diocesan strategic planning committee will serve as a Task Force to spearhead the study working collaboratively with the staff of the Office of Faith Formation. Members are: Msgr. Timothy Elmer, Msgr. Richard Kopp, Msgr. John Putano, Father Mark Kaminski, Father John Hogan, Father John Canorro, Father John Manno, Father Christopher Celentano, Father Richard Prior, and Father John Kurgan. Danielle Cummings, Chancellor will serve as the facilitator of the group and will oversee the Office of Faith Formation after August 1. The study will seek input from clergy, catechetical leaders, catechists and other diocesan ministry leaders. It is anticipated that the process will take no more than 6 months in order to provide a set of recommendations to Bishop Cunningham. Get to the heart of what it means to be a catechist!
The Diocese of Syracuse is offering a presentation titled “The Heart of the Catechist,” inspired by Pope Francis’ address to the Congress on Catechesis. We have been called by God to ministry - not just to volunteer. All catechists are encouraged to attend this inspirational experience.
